Her lavish stage costume which she is famous for, her dynamic personality that filled the room and told me that this was the real deal. Lady D’s singing style shows heavy influences of the greats. Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor, Etta James and Big Mamma Thornton come to mind as you listen and watch her do her thing. Her CD True Blue, released in 2000 is just a sampling of the down-home Blues dished out at a Lady D show. Many of the tracks are Lady D originals including the popular Po’ Girl Blues and Better off Alone her musical answer to BB King’s The Thrill Is Gone. She is currently working on a “recorded live” project to be released later this year. Lady D was one of three featured artists in the Houston Ladies Blues Legends tour of Italy in ’97. She is honored by being included in Down in Houston, Bayou City Blues, a recent book of the history of Houston blues. I’ve seen Lady D perform several times now and I continue to be impressed.
